Equality of Chances for all Mankind?

The Achievement Gap statistics we recently viewed in Humanities class :

"High school graduates live up to 7 years longer than high school dropouts."

This statistic to me would definitely go under surprising, yet I believe it belongs more in the "frightening" category when you look more in to the problem. I mean of course its surprising when you first read it, who would have known you would die early just because you dropped out of school. Although I would get the point after a few minutes of shock because looking back to what I have seen and heard of about dropouts. The thing is it's a bit of a no brainier. I guess what I mean is that in my explanation to this statistic would be that dropouts tend to get in trouble with the law, do drugs, are homeless, can't support themselves, or maybe even depressed and suicidal. Well that last part was just my opinion, but you get the point. Those also go as reason to be frightened. Although there are exceptions to these rules and statistics, like there are to all rules. This, dear readers, is definitely an example of the domino effect of life. One mistake could cause the whole set of dominoes that are perfectly set up by hard work to fall. It’s your choice, you could put your hand out to stop the next one from falling and rebuild, but whats the likelihood of that? Although there is always the question, is dropping out really the start of the effect or is there more to it? -Mikiko

This could be the beginning:

"By 4th grade, Black and Latino students are on average nearly 3 years behind their White and Asian students"

Why is this statistic on average true?-Mikiko

  1. I also agree with Mikiko, this statistic is very frightening. What happens after you drop out? Do you start working at a young age? To you hang out on the street with the wrong people? Do you start drugs? Does all this add up to shorting your life? -Kaitlyn

  2. I would say i sgree but just because dropouts quit school does not meen that they tend to do drugs and everthing, i think the whole dropout thing ties back to how latinos and blacks are below 3 grade levels.

  3. This is very understandable, having to watch every one of my classmate to one day become a drugdealer or rob me on the street when i'm with my girlfriend. I'm not saying that that's your future, but it is very painful to think back one day about how you guys used to be, and now criminals that are highly dangerous. i might sound really rediculous, but nobody will ever know how someone(you) will turn out to be like>.

  5. When kids drop out of school they are more likely to do something better then drugs. They work or maybe they help out their family. Some kids maybe end up in jail. But some kids do something better then drugs.

  6. Yes. I see your point Melody, But Mikiko isn't saying thats exactly what happends, but In most cases and what i've seen first hand is what happends. And thats also what the satistic states.

  7. Really interesting discussion you've sparked, Mikiko. I think your question about where this whole problem starts is a good one and a complicated one. Does it start at home? At school? Both? On the street? What city you are born in?

  8. The problem is actually yourself, because you're the one that's creating all of these problems, such as looking down on yourself. I think that a solution to this problem would be giving the kids good educations, so they can learn and see life the way white and Asian students do.
